On October 3, 2009, approximately 20 Slow Foodies gathered at Sumida
Watercress Farm for a tour of the 10+ acres of watercress cultivation
in the midst of bustling, urban Pearl City. Situated just off
Kamehameha Hwy. and nestled between three shopping centers, Sumida
Watercress Farm is an oasis of beauty and an example of slow food
philosophy and in its 8th decade of operation. Nourished by the
underground fresh springs and abundant sunlight, the watercress are

table.

Slow Food Oahu visits Slow Food Hawaii
Three Oahu Slow Food members (Laurie Carlson, President, Chuck Guigli,
and Francine Wai) joined Slow Food Hawaii June 6-7, 2009 on the Big
Island in Waipio Valley as Slow Food was hosted by Jason and Alberta
Mock Chew and family. The Mock Chew family cultivates taro in Waipio
Valley and shared, with the nearly 40 campers, their practices to
sustain taro farming in Waipio, the Big Island, and Hawaii in general.
As participants in Slow Food's Terra Madre in Turin, Italy, the Mock
Chew family hosted the event to raise money for Slow Food Hawaii to
enable other farmers to attend future Terra Madre events.
